The Equality Authority - (An tÚdarás Comhionannais) - Ireland

The Equality Authority is an independent body set up under the Employment Equality Act 1998. It was established by statute on 18th October 1999 to promote equality of opportunity and to combat discrimination in the areas covered by the Employment Equality Acts and the Equal Status Acts.

The Equality Authority replaced the Employment Equality Agency, and has a greatly expanded role and functions. The Employment Equality Act, 1998 and the Equal Status Act, 2000 outlaw discrimination in employment, vocational training, advertising, collective agreements, the provision of goods and services and other opportunities to which the public generally have access on nine distinct grounds which are:

  • gender
  • marital status
  • family status
  • age
  • disability
  • race
  • sexual orientation
  • religious belief
  • membership of the Traveller Community

European Year of Equal Opportunities For All 2007

2007 has been designated as "European Year of Equal Opportunities for All", by decision of the EU Council and the European Parliament. The Equality Authority is the National Implementing Body for the European Year in Ireland.
